Crawl Space Repair Challenge: Week 5 - All About Sump Pumps And Basins!
Brian’s was better
I agree thank you for watching
Thanks, never had to run a dehumidifier and this is great info! I quickly got tired of emptying the bucket so I’m trying to figure out where in my finished basement I can drain it more permanently. I actually was thinking to drain it out the same drain as my house ac unit but you said that’s a bad idea 🙁 I’ve got a bathroom sink, kitchen sink, washer/dryer hookup can I utilize any of those as a drain?
Many codes officials discourage tapping into sewer lines to drain dehumidifiers but I have seen people drain a dehumidifier into the washer discharge because technically you're not permanently tying into it. I hope that helps.
Where can I pick this up at?
Hey! You can pick this up at our DIY warehouse in Huntsville Tennessee diy.crawlspaceninja.com/pump-sentry-sump-pump-battery-backup-model-1622ps/ or we can ship it to you for free from our website! -
Well said. ✞ May days be blessed as well ✞
Thank you!
I'm in NC. I can't find in the code where it says in a sealed crawlspace the vapor barrier must go up the wall 12" and be mechanically fastened. Could you please cite chapter and verse? I'm looking at the residential code section R409 and can't find it.
R408.3Unvented crawl space. For unvented under-floor spaces, the following items shall be provided: 1.Exposed earth shall be covered with a continuous Class I vapor retarder. Joints of the vapor retarder shall overlap by 6 inches (152 mm) and shall be sealed or taped. The edges of the vapor retarder shall extend not less than 6 inches (152 mm) up the stem wall and shall be attached and sealed to the stem wall or insulation.
Outstanding. I'm getting ready to replace the old insulation batting in the attic and I wanted to check for air leaks. This video helps.
Thank you for letting me know I appreciate you watching Glad we could help
The Airwerx unit looks like an exact Alorair clone.
A lot of these companies make very similar looking products if not the same product and just rebadge them.
What's funnier is that Baseaire has the exact same HQ address as does Alorair.

For a Florida house that has piers and no walls around crawl space what is best way to insulate the subfloor ?
There is a lot to go into this. Feel Free to submit a Ask a Ninja form so we may go in-depth - crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-help-faq/
I didn’t know where to ask my questions, so I guess I’ll just comment here in hopes you could give me some advice. I’ve seen your wraparound porch video but mine is a little different. While having my porch above my crawlspace, about 1/3 of the porch covers the crawlspace, I have a vapor barrier only over the main structure. My hvac duct work is covered in condensation which is dripping onto my new 10 mil vapor barrier. Adding a dehumidifier seems unhelpful as I’m not trying to dehumidify the world lol. I’m just trying to tackle the issue with my insulated hvac lines and duct work sweating and causing water to collect only in those areas. I currently just bought two 3 speed fans, one on one side of the crawlspace facing the crawlspace door, and one at the crawlspace door facing the other way. Vents to the crawlspace is open here in NC. Temps 88-96, no mold, no wood rot. Will adding these fans be enough ? And do I run them only during the day when it’s hot out ? Or 24/7? Crawlspace is about 1400 sq ft, 3 1/2 ft high. About 8 vents.

New home build. Is doubling up the 6 mill with a 2nd layer be good or bad not recommended?
Not recommended. Moisture can in between them and since 6 mil isn't the strongest mil around it may break allowing moisture and water enter your existing encapsulation. Any mil that is a solid sheet not two fabrics stuck together with adhesive . Check out what we use - diy.crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-ninja-12-mil-crawl-space-vapor-barrier-1000-sqf/
@CrawlSpaceNinja so it is basically a code thing they did. Open vents plastic just on ground not tapped insulation stuffed in floor joists. That's it. Thank you.
Cheatum county TN
Michael, yes how to I do something about it? I had it done twice and still it smells. I’m in KY. TIA.
Lets go into this together. Here is a Ask a Ninja form - crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-help-faq/
How do you control humidity in crawl space if there's a normal size Doorway going into crawl space . Vented new build loose plastic/paper barrier.? Thanks.... seems like a nothing situation.
All block with brick outside face. No real dirt against crawl space all slopped. 3 or so feet on one side of space slopes about a 7' on other side. With water heater down there also.... maybe shouldn't purchase. That door tho...smh
We're doing a job now with a full size door. We are weather stripping the door to make it a little harder for outside humidity to enter the crawl space. We are installing a dehumidifier into the crawl space in order to control humidity while sealing the vents as well and encapsulating. I hope that helps thank you for watching..
Not the exact video for this question, but i went down in my crawl space and noticed EXCESSIVE amounts of condensation on the bottom of the subfloor and insulation…. Should I close my vents and move a dehumidifier down there? really at a loss for words because this place is only 3 years old…. thanks in advance!
Yes that should fix it!
Does it have a set CFM or does it adjust based on demand? Like when an exhaust fan comes on?
A set CFM
Does the extra drain let radon gas out and water in?
No!
It’s ridiculous I got a estimate for 20k I took there exact materials they will use cost around 4-5k and the rest is labor i don’t have mold, flood, termite issues and my space 3 ft high very easy install
Nice! DIY can be great if you know how to do it! We wish you luck and hope it goes great!
Thanks for the good video, I am having a house built in eastern Ky, I want the conditioned crawlspace with a 10min vapor barrier along with concrete slab over it. I am trying to get advice on that option. Can you offer your opinion?
Gotcha. We use 12 mil due to finding out most 10 mils are two 5 mils stuck together with adhesive. The 12 mil we use is a solid sheet of polyethene. Here is a link - diy.crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-ninja-12-mil-crawl-space-vapor-barrier-1000-sqf/
@@CrawlSpaceNinja excellent! Thank you. Would it be good to add the concrete on top? I’ve also seen some use spray foam over the entire vapor barrier.
Great thanks
You are welcome
Do I need to insulate subfloor if I insulated my brick Foundation
It is not needed but you can if you're looking to have your floors be warmer in the winter.
Thanks for information, what if your attic has paneling already and you want the whisper pan
Hey! Feel free to fill out this form so we can discuss in greater detail - buymeacoffee.com/csninja/e/111638
We are purchasing a manufactured home. So our crawlspace will be very tight. What do you recommend and do all these things apply to us? By the way we live in West Texas… But we do get a lot of rain sometimes and there's always water that comes from out of the house.
Hey! We would like to go into greater detail to explain properly. Feel free to fill out this Ask a Ninja form and we will go into this together! -crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-help-faq/
Getting ready to air seal the attic here in S. Tx adding blown in fiberglass, we live in a nightmare of a home! I have a hip roof design, that has slant roof louvers, plus what looks like ridge vents on the eave, some seem to be dummies and some, most, have been spray painted over, kind of sealing them, how do I fix this, just replace them all, and if so, the attic has zero baffles over these eave vents, would I need to install the baffles all around the perimeter? Are the roof louvers enough for attic venting in itself. We also have a chimney.. how do I go about insulating or creating a barrier when blowing in fiberglass.. Currently there is zero insulation around the chimney in the attic. Please help!
Hey! So we can explain in greater detail feel free to submit this Ask a Ninja Form - crawlspaceninja.com/crawl-space-help-faq/
Can a root cellar be made in the crawlspace area?
Yes! Any part from under the home can be encapsulated and increase your indoor air quality
Once you have the e80 installed in a 1900 sq ft home, set to 45%, what would you say is an acceptable variance we could expect? From what to what is reasonable?
Hey! There is a lot of things that cause difference in variance. Such as is this a sealed crawl space with vapor barrier? Do you have leaky pipes? Do you have any cracks in the foundation wall? Besides things such as that you can expect a proper crawl space to have a relative humidity level from 45%-55%
@@CrawlSpaceNinja@CrawlSpaceNinja With a whole home configuration, what is the expected variance of the humidity level in the living space (in the home, not the crawl space) from the set humidity level on the dehumidifier? i.e. If I have it set to 45% and it measures the humidity on my Nest as 55%, I assume the dehumidifier will kick in until the livable home space reaches 45%. This is my question, what variance is acceptable? My thoughts are the device will kick in until the "set" criteria is achieved, regardless of leaky pipes, cracks, etc. It would mean the device just has to work harder if there are inefficiencies. Thanks for your reply on this.
May I ask what is the mode setting for on the front interface ...just got mine June 2024....after washing filter and reinserting the unit sounds twice as loud... Thanks for time
Mold begins to grow at 60% so anything from 40%-55%
But what if it stinks? Had encapsulation done twice and it still smells? Have a dehumidifier as well, still stink is driving me crazy!
There could be a variety of things causing a bad smell. However check out what we use - diy.crawlspaceninja.com/anafresh-odor-eliminator/
Do the energy savings related to sealed crawls in the study take into account the energy used by dehumidifiers in the sealed crawls?
Yes!
So then its an easy DIY project?
Wouldn't say it is easy as most DIY Projects. However many of our DIYers are proud of their work! Check out our DIY Store - diy.crawlspaceninja.com/
How do I buy this product? Can I get your phone number?
Hey! Yes here is a link to our Hydraway System and feel free to call us at 865-659-0390 Link - diy.crawlspaceninja.com/hydraway-strip-drain/
Thank you so much for the information. I have a crawl space. They laid loose plastic, then covered it with a few inches of more dirt. Digging a trench to put in a sump pump then will install a properly laid vapour barrier. Should I just totally remove all the old plastic from under the dirt?
Yes as it could be holding moisture/mold
Is pier and beam better than a crawl space? If you get your house up 3 feet off the ground you don't have to worry about encapsulation and sump pumps, etc. What are the pro's and con's?
Some homes we have done have had 6ft tall crawl spaces. Encapsulating underneath your home improves the air that you and your family breathe. Feel free to submit a form here so we may go further -diy.crawlspaceninja.com/

How can I order the Dehumidifier kit with everything that in the video?

You're welcome! Thank you for the comment!
how many sump pumps would I need for a 28x80 home
You may need just one but it depends with how severe the moisture/water is that you deal with.
There is plastic under the rocks in our crawlspace and it’s not connected to anything and we would like to get our crawlspace encapsulated. Should that plastic under the rocks be removed or replaced?
Yes as that could be holding moisture or mold.
You mentionned a link to the whisper fan (4:15) and I don't see it.
Here is a link to all our fans! - diy.crawlspaceninja.com/fans/
What if I am just going in the center of the area?I I want to run ductwork and some cablesto the center of the far wall in a room but there's currently less than a 1 inch gap in that part of the floor. As long as nothing is resting on the dirt is it ok to dig? What kind of contractor can I even call to do this work?
Maybe a HVAC company and a landscaper to dig
Excellent explanation
Glad you think so!
Not sure if you will see this but I have a april Aire 1830 that started leaking from the side durning operation. I checked the drip panel tray but it is clear. Any advice before I replace?
Most likely best to contact Aprilaire Tech Support as they can troubleshoot with you and maybe do a warranty claim for you to get a new unit! Their number is - 800-334-6011
This is exactly what I'm in the process of doing. But first I have to remove and clean my soffit which has filled up with leaves and fiberglass dragged into the space by squirrels.
Good Luck!
Michael, code is different for covered vent / open vents for where? Are you talking about N. Carolina?
Hey! Our Corporate Location is based out of Knoxville Tennessee it is best to always follow your local codes!
Here in Illinois! When I call companies near me, they say that soda blasting is too messy to do in a crawl space. Instead, they use a HEPA vacuum and then spray it with chemicals.
There is tons of great options out there. Soda Blasting can be messy but that depends on how it is professionally done. As long as the mold is remediated and removed then job well done!
What’re your thoughts on laying down a second layer of vapor barrier over top of our existing vapor barrier in our encapsulated crawl space. It’s about ten years old and we’ve been down there a lot doing plumbing and other maintenance. The barrier we have now looks rough and has holes.
It is best to remove any old vapor barrier as that could contaminate your new vapor barrier with mold, moisture, and just overall uncleanliness. Also you wouldn't be able to prepare the ground for the new vapor barrier if old vapor barrier is on the ground.
Hi! We had mold air testing done in our home and the mold in our home air matched the air in our crawlspace. Long story short, there is absolutely no visible mold. We also just had all of our duct work replaced because there was gaps between the ducts and our vents but there is still mold in the crawl space air. Is it possible that it is just coming from the ground? If so, how would I deal with that without having to use harsh chemicals to kill it?
Lets talk more and dig deeper through our Ask a Ninja form. Here is the link - buymeacoffee.com/csninja/e/111638
